7 Questions to Ask When You’re Searching for a Law Firm To Represent You

Being in legal trouble is never any easy. It’s likely going to take a lot of time out of your day, and it could result in you losing out on money, or, even worse, going to prison. As afforded to you by the constitution, you do have the right to represent yourself in a court of law. However, this is taking a big risk and you may not be ready for all that an opposing lawyer may be bringing at you. Therefore, it’s likely that you are going to be better off if you hire someone to represent you for your case.

There are a lot of lawyers out there, so you may question who exactly you should hire. After all, you are putting a lot in their hands, so you had better hope that you choose someone that can win your case. Here are some tips for finding a law firm to represent you in a case when you need it most.

1. Do They have Experience in Your Legal Troubles?

The first thing that you’ll want to keep in mind is that you should find a lawyer who has experience in your legal troubles. There are a lot of different lawyers out there, all of whom are likely going to have spent quite a bit of time studying and becoming familiar with an area of expertise. If you need a divorce lawyer, you may not want to go with someone who is more familiar with DUI cases. Ideally, you can find a law firm that has experience in a variety of different areas, which will make things easier on you when working with them.

2. What Are Others Saying?

When it comes to reviewing lawyers, you can bet that previous clients are going to be brutally honest about the service they received. In the event that a law firm doesn’t work for their clients and they continually lose cases, you’ll be able to find out about it in a hurry. You may not be able to find a lawyer that has won every case they’ve ever taken on, but you should certainly look to avoid those who lose more often than not.

3. Do They Present Themselves Well?

When a lawyer walks with you into negotiations or even into the courtroom, their appearance is going to be received by the judge, jury and others involved in the case. Therefore, it’s important that the lawyer you work with presents themselves well, dresses appropriately, and handles themselves well when working on your case.

4. What Are Their Morals?

Some lawyers can be sharks and all they care about is making as much money as possible, no matter who the victims may be. Therefore, you should look for a law firm that has strong Christian morals that drive their decisions and how they go about their cases. These types of firms won’t look to just wreck everyone in their way, but rather make sure that the law is upheld and that everyone has a fair chance at being represented.

5. Are They Thoroughly Explaining Everything to You?

There might be a lot of legal jargon that you don’t understand, but that doesn’t mean that your lawyer should leave you completely in the dark when it comes to your case. If a lawyer tells you not to worry about things and they’ll take care of it all, you may want to reconsider who you are working with. You deserve a right to know what your options are in the case, as well as the developments and proceedings. If they can’t explain something clearly to you, that’s a bad sign.

6. Do They Pressure You Or Make You Feel Uncomfortable?

Piggybacking off the last paragraph, you should also consider how comfortable you feel when working with a law firm. If the pressure you or make you feel uncomfortable, then it’s not a good place for you to be in. You should look for a law firm that makes you feel respected, especially when you consider the severity of the situation. Your lawyer should be honest and open, which will make you feel much better during your time in the case.

7. How Much Do They Cost?

Of course, what it might all come down to is the brass tax: How much is the lawyer going to charge you for their services? Many lawyers may tell you that they have a certain fee, but they may fail to leave out the fact that they will charge you for every time you call them or email them. In order to make sure that you aren’t raking up a huge bill, be sure to ask about all of their costs before you have them take your case.
